Mittelschmerz (Ovulation Pain): Treatment and How Long Does It Last?

Mittelschmerz is mid-cycle ovulation pain that usually feels like a sharp twinge or dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen when the ovary releases an egg. It commonly occurs about 14 days before the next period and may be accompanied by light spotting, bloating, or clear stretchy discharge. For most women, the pain lasts from a few minutes to 24 hours, though it can sometimes continue up to 48 hours. Relief often comes from ibuprofen, naproxen, heat, rest, gentle movement, and cycle tracking. Severe, persistent, or unusual pain should be checked by a healthcare provider.
